Detested Adverts

There are two adverts I hate currently and I mean really, really hate.
The first is the replacement to one of my favourite ads, and I HATE it! There was nothing wrong with the old Haribo ad. The dad was tied up. The kid was a bullying interrogator. And she gave her dad the finger at the end of the advert, it was funny and witty, "now sign the confession"! Unlike this heap of shit:

I hate this advert with every ounze of my body.
1. I hate the smug family. If you were so smug, you'd be feeding your kids carrot sticks and home-made homous, not haribo.
2. Your daughter can't sing for shit!
3. Get off my fucking TV. Get back in your mini, with your two bikes for the four of you (what's with that, are your kids are so inbred, they can't ride a bike? Or have you just stolen the children and are bribing them with haribo?) and drive off a cliff!

The other ad, I detest, is the stupid advert for Galaxy, which tells everyone that then you eat Galaxy, you must have an eating disorder and hide chocolate all over the house.

1. I hate her, not to be one to judge people on looks, but she's weird looking, all elongated and out of proportion.
2. I hate the message that it gives (Galaxy is so moorish, your fat housemates will eat it all).
3. Who decorates that much of their house with the colour brown now a days?!
4. If she bought that much chocolate, there is no way she'd be that thin.

This version of the advert makes loads more sense...

The Dysfunctional family of Transistor 66

So wow, I don't seem to ever blog anymore. What is with that?

Anyways, today I bring some news from Canadaland.

As some of you know, my life so far back in Canadaland has been revolving around going to shows and listening to some sweet music.

First the sad news, a few months back I posted about a documentary about a venue here in Winnipeg called the Royal Albert. The Royal Albert has now been closed for 4 months due to a flooded basement and owing a tonne in back taxes. The city doesn't seem to care that all us music lovers are also Albert lovers and we need our local back! AND FAST.

In other news, and much better news, there is an awesome new documentary coming out about a little record company called Transistor 66. This family of musicians are some of the best I've ever heard, From the Vibrating beds to the Crooked Brothers... I love them all.

I've attached a little preview featuring all my dysfunctional friends and the Half Pints brewery, the documentary is set to come out in October.

The Days Britain Went to Shit!

This video is sickening. It makes me so angry. People are assuming this is in relation to the riots, maybe it is? But what if it's just the youths reaction to their position within the community?

The riots in themselves are bad and extremely sad, especially as they've bad named the original peaceful protest that took place in Tottenham. This is purely young children who feel shat on by the country, which is understandable, but if this is how you feel and you want to react, take it out on the large conglomerates, not the independent family run businesses who will end up suffering more from it; possibly going out of business, making more people suffer in the long time.
Even setting police cars on fire will make the country suffer, due to the amount of money that will be taken from the government to cover the replacement cars, this is also understandable, as you're fighting the public face of the oppressors! But within the bigger picture, it just seems ridiculous.

And, it's not a question of race and people believing so, irritates me. People are trying to find a collective to blame it on. The uneducated youth is the collective and only that! It's not race, religion or creed. It's uneducated, frustrated youth who haven't been taught or shown right from wrong. The youth who feel as though the community and country don't care for them, so why should they care in return.

I suppose the one thing we can be thankful for is that, unlike America, the police don't carry guns. Otherwise, we'd be seeing more rioting due to the death toll. This is also the reason why the army can't be called in. They aren't trained in containing a crowd, they are trained in protecting and effecting, which would cause more damage than good.

I guess the main question should be; how do we prevent this from happening in the future? Can we prevent this from happening in the future? What will it take for it to stop?

Some people have said bad weather would deter them, maybe it would?!
I guess, the only thing that might stop them, is when an innocent person dies. When someone keeping watch in their family business, or sleeping in their flat above a shop, which is set alight dies, or even someone who gets caught up in the riots dies. Maybe this is the only way. If so, then the country really has gone to shit!

Season 2, Episode 9...

I don't talk about this often as I feel if I do I'm bragging. In the summer of 2006 I had the chance to go to Miami and get a tattoo done by Ami James from the show tv Miami Ink. I was informed later that it was going to be in an episode and aired later that year. All that mattered to me was that I got the tattoo that would mean so much to me!

All the people who are close to me know that my Papa on my moms side was like my dad growing up. On August 13th, 2000 he lost his 7 year battle to cancer. He was the main male role model I had. He was my world so his passing was extremely hard..

It was coming up to be a year of his passing when I first saw the green sparrow. I have never seen anything like it before so I noticed it instantly. It was outside near the door to go outside and I sat on the otherside of the glass staring for what I think was 10 mins. The sparrow just stayed still for the entire time to my amazement then suddenly it flew away. Every year after that around the same time I have seen this sparrow. I don't know if it was the grief or what but I strongly believed it was my Papa's spirit. I did extensive research to find a bird like it but I could not. Whilst looking I stumbled across a paragraph stating that sparrows are believed to carry souls of the dead so it was considered horrible luck to kill one. Crazy right?! I don't believe in superstitions normally but now I do considering my circumstances.

So today Andy was on a mission to find it and he finally did (after 2 hours of looking) then we watched it. I was so against watching it before for some reason but now I'm happy and glad I did. The tattoo means the world to me and made the grieving process a bit easier. Watching the episode was so surreal but also made me get that twinge of sadness and lump in the throat. His presence is very much missed but never ever forgotten....

Lemon Cheesecake

I made a yummy Lemon Cheesecake and wanted to share it with you all.
I stole this ladies' recipe, due to it not involving Mascarpone (you really can't find it on Brick Lane), and the lack of baking required, with some mild changes.

Ingredients:
For the base -
200g digestive biscuits
100g butter
2 tsp of ground ginger

For the topping -
200g cream cheese
150ml double cream
75g icing sugar
Rind of 2 lemons
Juice of 1 lemon

How to make it:
Bash the shit out of the biscuits, either in a tea towel or sandwich bag, with a rolling pin or large blunt object. I used a rolling pin and sandwich bag (well Tom did but you know...).
Melt the butter in a saucepan, over a low heat, keep an eye on it you don't want it to burn.
Add the two together, with the ginger and get a vessel, any vessel but preferably at least 8" wide, pack it down nice and tight.
Put in the fridge, pref. for 2 hours before you adding the mixture.

Next, mix the cream cheese, double cream together.
Throw in the icing sugar.
Scrape the rind off the lemons and chop up nice and fine.
Then add the rind and lemon juice to the mixture.

Leave in the fridge for an hour.

After this, throw the mixture on top of the biscuit base - volia you've a cheesecake, throw it back in the fridge for at least 4 hours. BOOM! You've yumminess!

I threw blackberries and raspberries on it for prettiness and for one of your five a day.

You in film...

One of my close friends recently said to me, that while her friend was watching a film at the cinema, they couldn't concentrate, as they were far too distracted by seeing her on the screen.
The film was "The Kids Are Alright", I believe that Annette Bening's character was the friend-a-like, I'm about to watch it, so am excited to see if I see, that of which her friend did.
I've also had this experience though, while my oldest brother was at university, he called me to say that while watching "Almost Famous", he got extremely uncomfortable, as watching Penny Lane (Kate Hudson) was like watching me. I'm hoping he meant facially/expressions, rather than casual slut groupie! Here's hoping.
I've also had a couple of other comments, Lily Cole in Terry Gilliam's latest creation, among others.

Have you ever had this? Who is your duppleganger if not?
Last weekend, I spent an evening with my middle brothers duppleganger, it kept on throwing me, a lot. It's not cool to get that drunk with your brother's duppleganger, I can tell you! It weirded me out!

PS I'm assuming that I've similar facial expressions to Kate Hudson, as I adored Goldie Hawn when I was a child, and wished to be her, so probably picked up a few, but it's still weird to hear an older brother make such a statement.

My weekend

Well... I have been meaning to write for some time but for some reason I haven't. I think in part I was worried about what I would say and whether it would be of any interest to others! Today I decided to just write about something!

This weekend just gone I had some birthday celebrations. Those that know me will know that I am not always the best at making plans but I am so very glad I loosely put something together. It's my last birthday as a Howard so it felt justified! I've been living in Oxford for some time now. I really enjoy the city and have made some amazing friends but have always longed to be home in the North East. This weekend the North East came to me! (Obviously not all of it - but most definitely some of its best residents!) They travelled for 4 hours, some had lost wallets and had to borrow money but they were here!! Many of these friends I've known since infant school, some before and some after but all in all they are some of the most amazing people. It's somewhat unique to still be so close to these people and have grown up with them and shared so many memories with so many more to come! We talk about school plays and old teachers or my bouncy castle birthday party - none of us are shy in talking and sharing stories!

I am getting married in October and it was so lovely that people had an opportunity to meet! It felt in many ways that my different worlds collided but I didn't worry and everyone seemed to get on and have a great night (this being the best birthday present!)

It has made me even more excited about the 8th October not only to be marrying the most amazing man in the world (whose film knowledge is second to none!) and who spent Saturday BBQ-ing in the rain and making delicious food for everyone to enjoy, but we get to share it with all these wonderful people! Now I am not going to lie and say every second of planning a wedding is fun and enjoyable - it's pretty stressful and neither of us had any real idea about some of the things that it involved! Luckily we've had some great friends along the way to help and offer their amazing skills and services but also friends to remind me not to worry about offending people or trying to think of every possible eventuality but just to love every second of it and I know we will!

Roll on October!
